11/3/2004 Christian It's official - we're screwed. four....more....years...... Maybe George Orwell & Nostrodamus weren't so far off after all.
~~~~~~~~ 10/25/2004 Aaron An ULTRA THANKS to the Guy (and IÕm sorry IÕve misplaced your name) who drove all the way from Cleveland, Ohio to see us play. WOW. Please send me an e-mail, I would love to keep in touch with you and send you our next 50 CDÕs for free. I hope you enjoyed the show and please next time let us treat you to dinner or at least give you a free place to stay. Thanks for making the trip, you donÕt know how honored we were to know that someone likes our music enough to do such a thing. Your on our permanent guest list. I hope you made it home safe. Christian & Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 10/24/2004 Christian Well, the Slumber event was just plai cool. http://www.slumberduluth.com I'll have to see if I can influence Aaron to do this on a yearly basis. Thanks to all who came and hope to see the rest of you (hopefully?) next year! ~~~~~~~~~ 10/20/2004 Aaron I have a new photo blog. Look it up if you wish. http://moeview.slumberduluth.com ~~~~~~~~~ 9/27/2004 Christian Her name is Stella and she has more hair than me. OK, that's all I'll say. In other news, Otis ate a whole stick of butter tonight. Stole it off the counter. Something tells me if I ever have kids, they won't be much different than Otis. -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 9/26/2004 Christian It's a girl. Both baby, Mom & Dad are doing well. I don't want to ruin it for Aaron, so I'll let him fill in the details. Just wanted to let all of you know.... Take care -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 9/25/2004 Christian A cd is planned to be released of the Who Killed Cock Robin soundtrack. Featured: us, alan sparhawk and charlie parr. May be more. More details will follow as info comes in. Otis hasn't eaten anything weird in a while although I think he's been eyeing up some of my instruments I've been making him howl with. That's all for now. Much more as soon as I can. Lots and lots of stuff going on. BTW - no baby molina yet. hopefully soon! -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 9/16/2004 Aaron Many new things on the if thousands front. Slumber show coming up www.slumberduluth.com Were recording some MP3's for Dreamland Recordings. its an Australian independent CDr label specialising in releases by lesser-known artists worldwide. Covering such music as: ambient, drone, dark ambient, experimental, post rock, dream pop, shoegazer. Check them out,,, cant say enogh about them http://www.geocities.com/dreamland_recordings/ We also booked time at Crazy Beast studio to start recording our next record for Silber. www.silbermedia.com Ben Durrant recorded our 1st CD Candice Recorder. We cant wait to get back in the studio with him. http://www.visi.com/~durrant/ We are also planing some shows with a Chicago band by the name of Zelienople www.zelienoplemusic.com they make some great music. Thats all for now. Aaron ~~~~~~~~~ 8/31/2004 Christian Fall is coming through my window and I realized I hadn't written in a while. All is well. Aaron is busy organizing Slumber and I'm busy booking my first tour (with Devil's Flying Machine). Also working hard on getting the elf & Who Killed Cock Robin websites up and also the first elf dvd released - the Santiago Alvarez collection, which will be distributed by Secretly Canadian. Other than that, I'm almost done sanding the life out of my old Landcruiser so it can get painted before the snow flies. That, and making sure Otis doesn't eat anything dead and rotted during our walks. Otis is my dog by the way. So far he's eaten bumblebees, wasps, paper towels, plastic, sod, rocks, cardboard, a dead old rabbit and here's the best one.... cement. And the list keeps going. Labradors can and will eat anything when you turn your back -- and unbelievably not get sick. Otis, the world's only flightless canine seagull. take care everyone. -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 7/29/2004 Aaron SLUMBER SATURDAY OCTOBER 23RD THE MAC 22 N. 1ST AVE W. ~~~~~~~~~ 7/23/2004 Aaron I brings us great sadness to report that a good friend DJ Baby Judy Passed away this past Wednesday. Baby Judy was a huge part of our Yellowstone Cd. He can be found on the tracks Yellowstone & Radio is Fine. Baby Judy was a very talented person and every time I saw him he was full of smiles. He appriciated music and creation beyond any person I have ever known. Every time I play a show I always wished Baby Judy could join us on stage he added so very much to those two tunes. I dont think Yellowstone would be the same with out his addition. I will miss your DJ Baby Judy, Thanks for being a part of our lives. Aaron..... ~~~~~~~~~ 7/21/2004 Aaron SLUMBER SATURDAY OCTOBER 23RD THE MAC DULUTH MINNESOTA MUSIC TO SLEEP BY VISUALS TO MELT YOUR BRAIN W/ PAUL METZGER (TVBC) LOW IF THOUSANDS MANY MORE TBA. ~~~~~~~~~ 7/18/2004 Christian Hello - It's 72.5 degrees outside here in Duluth, which is for me the perfect temperature. Absolutely beautiful - not too hot, not too cold. Just right. Our break has been nice thus far - it's given us time to decide what we want to do next. Plus, I've been able to begin at least two new music projects - one of which is with Charlie Parr called "Devil's Flying Machine." I haven't thought of an appropriate description yet - I'm hedging somewhere around 'hillybilly nightmare' at this point. The other is a (gasp) techno/funk/dance thing with an old group of musician-friends. We'll see. Any chance I can get to blow the dust off all the bizarre instruments that are slowly piling up in the studio is is ok by me. It's also allowed me to listen to some of the cds I've been picking up here and there. I'm really getting into shannonwright these days as well as some old Marianne Faithful. Need to pick up some Miles Davis and middle eastern music as well (hey, variety is the spice of life). However, I cant seem to get enough of Pedro the Lion's "Control". It's been in my player since Spring 2003. Need to check out their latest, as well as Kid Dakota, which I'm told will be soon. Aside from messing with a ton of new sounds and trying to get outside as much as possible, that's about it for now. Until next time -take care C
~~~~~~~~~ 6/19/2004 Christian Hello - Surprisingly good night tonight. Played bass for an old improv band named "poorus" at local bar RT Quinlan's followed up by Black Eyed Snakes. I left when there were so many people packed in that you couldn't squeeze a penny between them. Plus, my feet literally stuck to the floor in the bar area (I don't really want to know why or what was down there) and it was so smoky I couldn't breathe... even though I myself smoke. I don't mean to whine but I remember some years ago I used to actually like that kind of atmosphere. sigh..... perhaps I'm growing up... sigh (again). Anyway, after 6 years I believe poorus is finally dead. Tonya (violin) is moving to Flagstaff, AZ next week. I'm glad it went out with a bang instead of a fizzle. Fun night. Good show. Many new faces (where do all these people come from??) Aaron & I discussed the next if thousands album last week. We have some very cool ideas. More soon. Joe Cunningham's web site now has a section of just bands - including a ton of photos of us. Check it out, as well as all his other images. The guy has got an amazing eye. Once again he's captured the heart of what if thousands sounds like visually. Amazing. take care & hope all is well with you -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 6/13/2004 Christian Well, summer weather finally hit Duluth. Last night there was a lightning storm off in the distance over the lake behind the fog which was quite spectacular. An old friend of mine, Jessie Taylor, and I sat on the back porch watching nature's display while contemplating life's mysteries. That's all for now. Otis says "hello". take care -C ~~~~~~~~~ 6/3/2004 Christian Sorry it's been a while since i last wrote. I've moved and am living in a new place now - much, much nicer. I finally had enough of Duluth's famous Central HIllside. Most of the fame is owed to a slew of bizarre murders over the years. My new place has a great view of the lake - quiet and comfortable. I also have a black lab now (named Otis) who has become my shadow and all around pal. Aaron & Kyle are having a child soon and I guess I get another critter. Hmmm. Although if thousands plans to take a much needed break, I'll be busy as always. I've been working on a new band with Charlie Parr www.charlieparr.com called "Devil's Flying Machine". Charlie on Banjo and myself on archtop 6-string. The basis of Devil's Flying Machine is dark old-time music from the turn of the century centered around the concept of a drone. Too hard to explain - you'll just have to come and see us. And get this - I actually move onstage, That alone should be enough to make you stop by. I'll just say that it's everything that if thousands isn't -- but in a very good way. We're tentatively planning on a debut concert in July with Black Eyed Snakes and touring New York & out east this fall. Aside from that, I'm hoping to work with Bridget Riversmith on a book idea this fall to hopefully be available by Christmas. Which reminds me - if all goes well, I'll be releasing a DVD of all the e.t. performances thus far by around the same time. That's all I can think of for now. Pretty beautiful day here - not a cloud in the sky. Somehow it's still cold in the shade, though. Ah, Duluth. Looking forward to the First Avenue show on Saturday. Should be a great one. Besides the fact that I'm picking up my Optigan as well. Many, many thanks to Haley Bonar for picking it up during her West coast tour and Max HIllerman for selling me what I've been looking for for over 2 years. take care! -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 6/3/2004 Aaron Well 1st ave main room show on Saturday with a whisper in the noise and cloud cult, after that.... no more live shows for some time. Summer off for sure! back at some sort of show in late fall or winter. I think we will start to work on more recordings soon. Some for film some for cd? Joe Cunningham came up this past weekend and took more photos. Look for them at http://www.joecunningham.com/ also look for a new web page up this summer. Joe is a web designer and has offered to build us a mack daddy of all web pages. Some cool ideas. Christian and I dont have the time to spend on such details so Joe is taking over the web side of things for us. Send him some business, hes a great guy with a great eye. Thats all for now. ~~~~~~~~~ 5/25/2004 Aaron 2 more shows this weekend and next. this saturday at the MAC in duluth with Al Sparhawk, Rivulets, and Chris Brokaw. next Saturday at 1st ave main room MPLS with a whisper in the noise and Cloud Cult. After these two shows we are taking a break! Really! Bar shows are getting old and if most of you dont already know I am expecting a child in Sep. We will just focus on our next CD and soundtrack work. Beyond all of that things are well, a bit cold in Duluth still. Im looking forward to spending time outside workin gin the garden and such. Hope to see you at a show. Aaron ~~~~~~~~~ 4/28/2004 Christian Great weekend. We spent the evening with a marvelous photographer from Mpls named Joe Cunningham. This guy has an incredible eye and took some of the best photos of us that I've ever seen. I've added a link on our "connect" page, but his website is www.joecunningham.com There's a photo of Aaron up there now. Saturday was the sold out Prairie Home companion show with Charlie Parr performing. Wonderful. Pardon all the "wow"kind of expressions, but, well.... it's true. take care & hope to see you soon -C ~~~~~~~~~ 4/18/2004 Christian Hello! It's 5:45 am and a really nice thunderstorm just came through Duluth. The new web site is up. I hope it proves to be a better design, more readable & comprehensive. After approximately an ocean liner's worth of caffeine, tremendous lack of sleep and a few short steps from taking a sledgehammer to my computer, I must admit that I'm pretty happy with the result. I don't know how real geeks can do this on a regular basis. take care & thanks for reading. I really need to go to sleep now. -C ~~~~~~~~~ 4/15/2004 Aaron Not much news to report. we have 2 shows and after that we will spend our time and focus on recording and summer relaxation. Christian is working on our new web design and that should be up this weekend. IÕm looking forward to Slow Dancing Umbrella's new CD. Charlie Parr will be on Prairie Home Companion 4/14/04 5pm. Low will be traveling to NY to do some finishing work on their next CD. I heard some of it and it sounds great. I watched a movie this past Sunday that really messed me up, it's an HBO Documentary called The Smashing Machine. Its all about a extreme fighter and the feeling he must get just before the fight made me almost ill. Great movie, great soundtrack by Boxhead Ensemble. Enjoy spring. ~~~~~~~~~ 3/7/2004 Christian See Aaron's 3/5 entry. My feelings exactly. I'm still in a state of blissful shock. Great show. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks to all. ~~~~~~~~~ 3/5/2004 Aaron Thanks to A Whisper in the Noise, Kid Dakota,& Matty from Faux Jean. Last nights show was great. Thanks to all who came out Nicole and thanks to the Triple Rock for doing such a great job. A very special thanks and I promise to learn your names.... The kindest of all folks comes to see us and is so supportive brought his wife and daughter to the show last night. Their daughter listens to our CD for bed time at night and they asked to take a photo of me with their family so they could show her when she grows who makes the music that puts her to sleep at night. Wow! Thanks you guys... that means the world to us. Please contact me ASAP,, I would love a copy of that photo. All my best, Aaron... ~~~~~~~~~ 2/21/2004 Christian NEW THEREMIN!! My ugly little plastic box with a radio attenna is now a thing of the past. I finally upgraded to a decent one which was built by local mad scientist Tim Kaiser. Everyone that has seen it seems to agree on "Wow". OK, onto the serious stuff. Many apologies for no entires in a while. I've been inundated with many projects lately - one of which is getting the handmade cases finished for the limited release side of the Whisper in the Noise Split to be released March 4. OK, the big secrets out - they're made of wood. Now I know why no one's ever made a cd case out of wood. Why? BECAUSE ONLY A MADMAN WOULD ATTEMPT IT! And I guess I'm just such a madman. The recording is named "2d". The first person who emails us with the correct answer to what "2d" actually means gets a free copy (this doesn't count the few who already know). Good luck! A few other items of note are the new Charlie Parr album, "King Earl", which will be released March 4th, check out charlieparr.com I was fortunate enough to be asked by Charlie to play theremin on 2 tracks, plus design the art. Speaking of art, I'm nearly finished with the art for Haley Bonar's very limited release 5-song ep. It looks pretty neat if I do say so myself. Although we have some shows coming up this spring, we're concentrating mainly on soundtrack work which we find more applicable to the music we make. As a friend told me shortly after "Candice Recorder" was released.... "Ya know, I'd rather listen to ya then look at ya..." Well, it's not as if we do David Lee Roth splits on stage while performing, so I guess in some ways he was correct. We intend to keep performing regardless of the impact my cynical frIend's comment had, but films are more where our hearts lie right now. Doing soundtracks was our plan (or should I say "dream") from the beginning. In fact, we were asked recently to do the soundtrack for another film, this time a sci-fi/horror flick which I suspect will begin shooting sometime this summer. Details to follow as info trickles in. Honestly, I'm still astounded whenever opportunites such as this arise (when put into the perspective of the short history of if thousands). If that sounds unprofessional, so be it. I don't care. I'm hoping to have a brand spankin' new if thousands website up by the end of this month. "Hope" seems to be the keyword here. Hans Johnson will be releasing his latest recording of the Maasai next week at Sacred Heart here in Duluth - check out his site at laleyio.com The music he's captured will blow your mind. Talk about pure music... The goings on of Travis Wilkerson's extremelowfrequency (ELF) films are still moving nicely. We're just putting all the final touches on the first release. Making an album and making a film are two different worlds I've come to appreciate and respect. Lastly... two things I'm really being horrible with lately -- e.t. and my every-other-month article for the Walker Art Center at mnarts.org This is a reminder to myself as well as anyone who wants to throw things at me when I'm walking down the street. Both are coming very soon, I promise. Well, those are the highlights for now - or at least all I can muster at this time. It's 3 am an my eyes are burning. Sincere thanks to you and hope to see you at one of the upcoming shows. take care -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 1/18/2004 Christian OK, so I'm a cranky puss sometimes. Wait until you see the new cd, due out in the beginning of March. You'd swear that I did have a lot of time on my hands. Truth is, I feel very good about this latest recording, so I've denied myself sleep just to get it done. There are tenative plans to release the album on the main stage of First Avenue in Mpls with A Whisper in the Noise - we're suppose to be opening for The Church. More on that as more info trickles in. The recording itself, well, all I can say right now is I'm very proud of this recording. We're only releasing 300 copies of the handmade cd's, so let us know if you'd like to pre-order by sending us an email. I'll be putting the album on our "look, listen, buy" page as the date nears closer. Thanks much to everyone Stay warm (it's about 20 below here right now). -C ~~~~~~~~~ 1/2/2004 Christian I don't have a lot of time on my hands. I wish I did. I just never seem to sleep. Since if thousands began slightly less than 4 years ago, my theory has been - I'll sleep when I die. There's too much living to be done right now. HAPPY NEW YEAR AND BEST OF WISHES TO ALL IN 2004! -C ~~~~~~~~~ 1/1/2004 Aaron Happy New Year. We are excited for 2004 we have a few shows in the works and are thinking of our next CD? Some ideas for the next record will demand many many hours of recording but in the end we should have something different. I was at Christian the other day and saw a prototype of the next CD release with A Whisper in the Noise. That guy has lots of time on his hands. I will say it looks like nothing else out there. Christian is also in the process of changing our web page... time for something new. Al Sparhawk stopped over last night for some New Years snacks. Low is busy and are in the planning stages of their next CD. Also Mim and Al are expecting another child, I think she is 4 months along. We wish them well. Haley Bonar is planning her next CD as well. From what I have heard, it should be great. We have a show coming up with 2 of my most fav bands... Paul from a fantastic punk/jazz/middle eastern band called T.V.B.C. and Kid Dakota. Well it's been 4 years for if thousands and we feel lucky to be where we are. We started this project with no idea that people might actually like what we do. There are so many people to thank for that. For starters our family for all the support. Duluth music community for having an open mind. Al Sparhawk for his love of music. Brian John Mitchell for putting out our very 100% improvised lullaby CD. The Chairkickers bands for supporting each other. Secretly Canadian for all the hard work with distribution and radio and press. City Pages for listening and sharing. Ripsaw for the support. Tim Anderson. Travis & Susan Wilkerson (up front films) for their vision of film and music. Haley Bonar for her love and support. And the following bands who we have played with and that we love... Kid Dakota, Haley Bonar, Shinny Around the Edges, Low, Rivulets, Both, Sin Ropas, Whisper in the Noise, Jonas, April Seconds, I Am The Slow Dancing Umbrella, GST, Coach Said not to. Francis Gumm, I will add more when I remember them all but to all of you who listen and come to see us and write us, THANK YOU, HAPPY NEW YEAR, We will see you all soon. Aaron & Christian (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 12/17/2003 Christian just a small clarification on the below entry. aaron is the dork in if thousands. i am the sex symbol. just wanted to set the record straight. he always gets that mixed up. and THANKS to all of you for helping us make it to the top ten! -C ~~~~~~~~~ 12/17/2003 Aaron Thank you CITY PAGES STAFF! What can one say when a group of folks vote your latest CD to be one of the best of the year? Thanks to you and all that listen and support us. We are just a couple of dorks in Duluth making some noise. But we love that noise. We will be playing some shows in MPLS very soon so in Feb/March look for us. Thanks again. Release planned for mid-Jan 04. All I'm saying about the album for now is you've never seen anything like this before. -The Christmas split with Shiny Around the Edges is done. Planned to be ready by the end of next week, along with a spankin' new site design which will be ever changing and ongoing until my dream of living on a private island earning a living by communicating with dolphins is realized. This album will be fully-downloadable for FREE! It's our gift to you. -e.t. will be starting up again at the end of January 04 @ Harbor City International School (here in Duluth). Very, very cool place. I wish I was a teen again so I could go to school there. I tell ya, kids got it all these days.... -Our first full-length soundtrack will be released also in Jan 04 with a dvd collection through director Travis Wilkerson's e.l.f. films (extremelowfrequency films) titled "He Who Hits First, Hits Twice, The Films of Santiago Alvarez, a Collection." -I've been asked to perform theremin on Charlie Parr's next album which is tentatively planned to be released in March 04. OK, my plan tomorrow is to paint my bathroom at some point so I better attempt to get some sleep. We'll keep those of you who actually read this thing informed of the details concerning all the above. take care. i'm off to the land of nod. -C ~~~~~~~~~ 11/22/2003 Christian Just read a story about the blues. Great quote from the legendary Honeyboy Edwards: "I'll tell you, some guys can make so many chords it don't sound good. They're making too many to put in one place, you know what I mean? You take another guy with one chord - only one chord. He can just hold one chord and everybody's looking at him all day. One chord can kill a man dead. One chord and hold it there, you can kill a man dead." Thank you, Honeyboy... -C ~~~~~~~~~ 11/20/2003 Aaron I was asked to play bass for Haley Bonar www.haleybonar.com for an up-comming show so we got together and played some songs last night. It went verry well, I remember how much fun it is to play bass and Im concidering starting a fun little trio band of bass, git & drums. Any one looking to play some music? Well something fun to do. I think my good friend Jeremy is back in the area. I got a strange phone call today and Im sure it was him. Looking forward to seeing him. I work at a school and there is this kid who will be a weather man some day. He knows more about weather then most weather folks. So he is predicting snow this Sunday & Monday. Big he tells me, could be big. He showed me some web page with all this stuff on it and in his weather language he showed me what could happen. I think thats cool,, to know what you want to be at age 16 and to have that much passion for it. Good night, Aaron ~~~~~~~~~ 11/18/2003 Christian All the news you need to know. Well, that's what one of our local news channels says (and I have absolutely no idea what it means). I mean, how would they know?? I'll just say if you've never seen our nightly news here, you're in for a treat. My favorite so far was a top story about a sharp curb outside McDonald's up by the mall. It apparently popped a couple people's tires. The best part was the in-depth reporting. They did an interview with a city worker who looked at the curb and said (I'm not kidding), "Yep, that's a sharp one there." And here I thought people dying in Iraq was the big story. No wonder I quit my career in journalism. Apparently, I've been mislead. But, I'm not here to write about curbs, let alone sharp ones. Just wanted to drop a note to say all is well. Tonight we had a short recording session with... well, I'll just keep it a secret for now. It went great. Her singing stopped me in my tracks until my feet got numb. It'll be on our Christmas split cd with Shiny Around the Edges. We're planning on releasing it ONLINE & FREE to you on the 2nd or 3rd week of December. Why? Well, because we're such nice guys. We also thought it would be, quite simply, a neat idea to do it. We'll keep you updated. Also, in response to all the emails about e.t. that I've been receiving.... first, thank you for your concern. Secondly, yes - e.t. will prevail. I've just been forced to rework everything since the Norshor's closing and it's taken me more time than I planned. e.t. will be up and running again very soon. Guess that's all for now. Hope all is well with you. -C
~~~~~~~~~ 11/14/2003 Aaron Im looking for a trumpet or a french horn. Lows in the 12 to 4, wind chill below zero. We might be playing some shows soon. December and January. No offical word yet so I wont say anything. I know we said that we would take the winter off but these are good shows so we have to break our promise. I went to see Happy Apple last night,,, always a great show. www.happyapplemusic.com Winter in Duluth can be slow and Im looking for things to do. Might do staind glass class or something with wood. Thats all for now. Send us a not,, out e-mail has been empty. A(if thou) ~~~~~~~~~ 10/21/2003 Aaron Well the house project is almost done. Many $, many hours spent on this house but I am happy with it. Christian and I / if thousands will be doing some recording in a weeks time. A christmas / winter music split with Shiny Around the Edges www.shinyaroundtheedges.com . After that we will take the rest of the winter off to gather thoughts, & mind. We will then look forward to the next CD, shows, tour? who knows. Hope your all doing well. We will diary often. Thanks, Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 10/14/2003 Christian The Norshor Theater here in Duluth has closed its doors for an indefinite period. It's a sad state of affairs when the only venue in our town that accepted us and gave us (as well as countless others) our start is the same that can't survive because fewer and fewer of us simply have less and less in our pockets to patronize it. All the while billions and billions of tax dollars are being spent on a war no one can honestly explain nor justify with a peaceful heart and clear concience. -C ~~~~~~~~~ 10/4/2003 Christian Just stopping in to say hello. Aaron is busy with large-scale remodeling on his home and I'm busy with film work and music. Somehow found time to paint my kitchen & rip up the old carpeting in my bedroom, though, so I guess I'm remodeling as well. By the way, if anyone out there has a mellotron or a martenot they'd like to sell me for less than $20,000 that would be just swell. In my dreams. Beginning to get chilly here. Winter. Looking forward to the first snowfall. IDA plays at experimental tuesdays this Tuesday (7th). Marc Gartman will also be showing his documentary of Low. If anyone reads this thing, please stop down to the Norshor Theater in Duluth. Show begins at 9 pm or so. Should be a great one. That's all for now... take care -C ~~~~~~~~~ 9/3/2003 Christian We played at the Kitty Cat on Saturday, then bleach dripped from the ceiling. That's all I gotta say about that. ~~~~~~~~~ 8/27/2003 Christian We've been immortalized in the comics by Greg "Cougar" Conley, comic strip writer for our local Ripsaw News, and guitarist for Both. Thanks, Greg. ~~~~~~~~~ 8/25/2003 Aaron show this saturday aug 30th at the kity kat club in minneapolis. this will be our last show for a while.. need to take some time off after a long but great spring and summer. we are working on a couple colobrations with (a wisper in the noise) & a christmas cd with (shiny around the edges) while we take our long break i plan to finish working on the house, work on some new music and plan for the next if thousands cd. when you ask? i cant say. its going to be a big deal i tell you! big big big! no, i dont know, something different, something new. we will keep updating the web sight and adding mp3's and such so keep looking us up. words of advice.... take a deep breath and count to ten before you say something stupid! ~~~~~~~~~ 8/19/2003 Christian Good God, the diary is alive again. Much to say, IÕll try to keep it short. LetÕs see... Butte was weird. Travis WilkersonÕs movies and independant films from his company, ELF (extremelowfrequency) will be shown at the Norshor Theater here in Duluth beginning in October. Just started laying out lalyeio.com, Hans JohnsonÕs website about the Maasai people. HeÕs releasing his 2nd cd of field recordings from his 2nd trip to East Africa back in May 03. Absolutely amazing music. Website hopefully up very soon. WeÕre in the final stages of the (as yet unnamed) split cd with A Whisper in the Noise due out before Christmas. IÕve been asked to write a music column every other month for mnartists.org. experimental tuesdays is going very well & IÕm working on a better website. Performed a few weeks ago at the 3 Muses in MPLS with Tennessee band Emery Reel. Nice guys, great music. Check 'em out. WeÕll be performing at the Kitty Cat Klub in MPLS on Aug. 30. DonÕt let the name fool you. Address is on our ŌshowsĶ page. Been playing a lot of slide guitar lately. Charlie Parr's fault. And, as always, Aaron is blowing things way out of proportion in the 7/16 entry. There were 5 people listening to us at Greenman: Haley, two bartenders, the soundman and a guy who was so stoned he couldnÕt move. Until next time good night -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 8/19/2003 Aaron I have nothing to say! ~~~~~~~~~ 7/22/2003 Aaron Some friends of ours who we met at Sundance Film Fest just released their new CD / EP Shiny Around the Edges (why do I love you.) Some of the best songs I have heard in a long while. Please visit them and buy their goods @ www.shinyaroundtheedges.com ~~~~~~~~~ 7/21/2003 Christian sorry. someone or something wiped our entire diary off the face of the cyber earth as of friday. we're working on it. ~~~~~~~~~ 7/16/2003 Aaron Well it is summer. We played Greenman last weekend. Haley was on at 11am and we went on at noon. Haley had a packed house and when we got up, they all left. We playd for 2 bartenders, Haley, & 1 or 2 others. What a drag! Some days Im not sure if this band is ment to play shows? We play in MPLS this Friday with A Wisper In The Noise. Heading out to Montana soon. I decided to fly rather then drive. Not sure how I will afford this trip, but I can't miss out on this. LOW is in Spain on tour opening for Radiohead. Im sure things are well with them. Must be a shock to play shows with 500 or even 1000 people but to play for 10,000 or more. Wow! I asked Al & Mim if they were ready for that. How could you answer that question with nothing to relate to. I had my birthday on Sunday! Thank you to all who shared it with me. Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 7/3/2003 Christian New ""reviews"" page set up on website. Contains past articles, reviews, interviews, radio streams. Check back from time to time for new additions. ~~~~~~~~~ 7/3/2003 Christian April Seconds did great. They went to Alan's and I went to an appointment. When I got down to Alan's about hour later they were already recording their 2nd song, flawlessly. Talk about wasting no time! They recorded the whole cd within about 3 or 4 hours & from what I heard, it's impressive. Let's hope it'll be on the shelves soon. We'll keep you updated. Happy 4th to all. We yokels up here in Minnesota actually get to celebrate the 4th like the rest of you this year. New laws went into effect that no longer ban fireworks. Up until this year, even sparklers were ""extremely dangerous"" (I'm not joking). WeeHoo! Sparklers! We're livin' on the edge! -C ~~~~~~~~~ 6/26/2003 Aaron April Seconds are in town this weekend to record with Al Sparhawk. Im looking forward to this one. They always blow me away and I have waited for over 2 years for these cats to release something. Mom & Dad are in town this weekend as well. Looking forward to Mom's homemade enchiladas. My grandma who is all Mexican showed my mom how to make them just right. Im one lucky bastard. I picked up an old 16mm film projector today. Works great. & this thing called a signal tracer? Not sure what it does, but it's cool looking. Im off. Aaron (if thosuands) ~~~~~~~~~ 6/19/2003 Christian Great show last Friday. I think Sin Ropas blew everyone away with their demure talent. All bands sounded great, although I missed Al's performance of ""Virgin Bride,"" because of a prior committment. I heard it was metaphorically like the old Memorex ad of the guy sitting way down in a recliner with his hair blown back. In other news.... Working on a split cd with A Whisper in the Noise www.awhisperinthenoise.com which will hopefully be out by this fall. Working on cd art & overall design with old friend & wonderful artist, Jessie Syndnes, who I studied art with years back and is remarkably from Aaron's home town (small world). Looks like Travis is going to release the soundtrack we did for ""Accelerated & Undeveloped"" in a dvd/cd set. Charlie Parr www.charlieparr.com is going out to Butte to help with the soundtrack to the next film as well as a young friend of mine & aspiring filmmaker named Jackie Bradley (Jackie played cello on Haley's cd, ""...the size of planets""). It's like a little family up here. More talent in this little pocket of the northwoods than you'd ever expect. Lots more going on but I don't want to give away all the surprises. Beautiful day here. I'm heading out to enjoy some of it. Been getting into the ""old"" stuff lately. Think I'm gonna kick back tonight & listen to ""The Catherine Wheel"" and wonder what planet David Byrne came from. Until next time -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 6/11/2003 Aaron Show this Friday at the Norshor in Duluth. Liz is going away to Utah party. Playing with Al Sparhawk and Estate sale and our new Fav band Sin Ropas. Just finished recording some more soundtrack work for Travis Wilkerson. It might turn into our next CD? It sounds great. Very pleased with Jake Larson and his gear and it was nice to record at home. Look him up www.jakoblarson.com Im getting excited to go out to Montana this summer to work on Travis Wilkerson's new film. Al Sparhawk and I and others are doing some on sight soundtrack work. Haley Bonar has the lead part in the film. Im so excited to be back to work with these friends. I think Haley is playing drums with us this friday. She is a great drummer. Im in my robe this fine Wed morning listening to Miles Davis - Porgy & Bess, what a great album. Yes thats right no CD here wax on diamond folks! See you this weekend. Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 6/9/2003 Christian Hello. I started to write about all the things that are going on with me musically and artistically and it ended up being very long and my eyes started to ache. No break for me. As my Mom used to say, ""No rest for the wicked..."" So, I'm just here to say hello instead. Hello. More soon.... -C ~~~~~~~~~ 6/5/2003 Aaron Not much new to report in if thousands land. We are working on some more recordings tonight for another film by Travis Wilkerson. Planing a trip to Butte Montana this July with Al Sparhawk (LOW) to record in a haunted mine for a film by Travis Wilkerson. Beyond that we are enjoying a break from it all. Im doing tons of remodeling work on my home. Sheetrocked the kitchen, lots of landscaping & gardening. Christian is ? well Im not sure what he is doing. We hope to see you all soon and enjoy the weather. Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 5/19/2003 Christian New photos from the tour shot by Marc ""DarkOne"" Gartman posted on our photo page. -C ~~~~~~~~~ 5/17/2003 Aaron (From Aaron) The tour was fun. Wasn't sure how 18 hour car rides would go but all in all it was great. I thought Haley was going to loose it with laughter. She loves to kid around and we were rolling most of the time. All the venues were very nice and all the people we played for were great. We sold some CD's and a shirt here and there. Chicago has some great Mexican food. (just like grandmas) Check out the band (Sin Ropas) My God are they great. I can't take their CD out. We listened to that CD every 5th hour. Other Music being played in the tour van was... Sunhouse, Broadcast, Neko Case, April Seconds, Husker Du, Charlie Parr, Lots of comps that people gave us, etc etc.. Al is a drivin fool. That guy Im not sure how he doe's it but he drove every second of the way, except when Haley stole the van and drove around the parking lot one morning. NYC is crazy but fun. I could spend more time there. RI was great. I ate at this very cool Cuban resturant called ""Cuban Revolution"" Loud Cuban music great food. Marc Gartman joind us for most of the tour playing lap steel. Marc is the funniest guy ever. Thanks Marc. Tom Herbers did our sound most of the way. Thanks Tom. For those of you who came out to see us and wrote us, thank you very much. It is a great gift to be able to speak with you all and we enjoy getting e-mails form you. See you on the road again some day. Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 5/12/2003 Aaron Back home. The tour is over, the shows were fun and it was great to see the country. NYC is crazy, RI was a cool city. Im tired and ready to get on with my day to day life. Strange to leave it all behind and put everything on hold. Thanks to all of you who came out to a show. Hope to see you again some day. Aaron.. ~~~~~~~~~ 5/12/2003 Christian OK, here's my rundown of the tour. I'll attempt to be as brief as possible. THURS 5/1/03, Spirit of the North Theater, Duluth: Packed House. Best place we've ever played in Duluth. This Theater needs to be used A LOT more. It's way too much of a secret. FRI 5/2/03, Chicago, Schubas: Great sound, great venue, friendly folks. My oldest sister Faith and brother in law Gary showed up which was very nice. We shared the bill with some other bands, most notably ""Sin Ropas"" which blew me away. Check them out at www.sinropas.com not much to see, but there's some mp3's you should definitely check out. SAT 5/3/03, Bloomington, Rhinos: All ages venue. Very good sound system again. I helped Alan rotate the van's tires in the parking lot before running onstage. My hands were black. Bought a new black vintage suitcoat at a local retro store since the other one is falling apart after 3 years of abuse since the first show we ever played. I've retired it to wrap around keyboards in cases for extra protection. Can't seem to let the thing go (not unlike like my worn-out faded black pants). SUN: 18 hour trip out to New Hampshire. Alan was beginning to speak in tongues. Stayed with & picked up Marc Gartman who played laptop slide with us until Cleveland. One of the funniest people I've met. NH is beautiful. Walked on the beach, ate a lot of ice cream. nice break. Played Gartman's old accordian. Didn't know I could play an accordian. Now I want to buy one. Beautiful place where Marc lives. I stayed up and listened to the night sounds until 4:30 am. I've fallen in love with this area. ***Tom Herbers, MPLS sound man & engineer extraordinarre joins us again until tour's end*** MON 5/5/03, Cambrige, MA., Middle East Underground: Shared bill with Pedro the Lion and too many other bands. Management wanted to have only if thousands play on the ""side"" stage (actually the side of the bar), between bands or in front of the stage. Felt infantile and more than a little unwanted. We decided not to perform. Aaron regularly played with Alan & Haley and I played with Alan and we would've only gotten about 15 minutes anyway, so..... That's rock & roll. PTL was wonderful as was Haley & Alan, of course. Great venue. TUES 5/6/03, AS220, Providence, RI: Nice little gallery space inside a huge multiplex of gallery spaces. Sit down show, all the chairs were filled. Joined by Daniel from Ida. Probably our best show all around since no one was overly concerned with anything except just having fun. Good spirits all around. WED 5/6/03, Knitting Factory, New York: Great show, too bad hardly anyone was there. The sound was the best yet. I was told that back when, this was the first venue in New York that Low played and only about 6 people were in the audience so I didn't feel so bad. I honestly didn't know what to expect. Probably some rock-n-roll ridiculousness since we were in NY. However, it was another great show. Ty Braxton (son of the famous composer) joined us onstage. Great guy, kinda sucked to say goodbye. We walked and walked and walked and walked.... and WALKED everywhere around NY. Saw the hole in the skyline where the towers used to be. Felt very, very strange. Walked up & down Broadway and all over. Saw too many things to list. Ate at a great Polish restuarant, had a New York Bagel & everyone else crammed pizza before we had to leave. I think my favorite memory was seeing the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Felt a lot like the first time I saw Mount Rushmore. THURS 5/7/03, Doc Watson's, Philadelphia: My favorite venue of the whole tour. I don't know what it was, but I really liked this place. The sound system was Crate and Peavy but Tom made it sound like it was made out of diamonds. The crowd was great. Bitter Bitter Weeks shared the bill. Shot a game of pool, ate a Philly cheese steak sub. Stayed in a town called King of Prussia where I swear nothing but a Holiday Inn, some outlet stores and a bar/restuarant with insaney huge hoagies only exist. FRI 5/8/03, Misson Space, Baltimore, MD: An all-encompassing media/art space. Our best sounding night. Great people. Met Catherine who does the Low & Rivulets sites along with her boyfriend, Mark. Very sweet people. Ate at an authentic Thai restuarant - Duck with roasted basil & chili sauce. Tried to buy a broken accordian at a music store but they wouldn't budge. Hardly anything else was open. There was an art show feauturing hand made furniture some nights before. Awesme stuff. Check out www.ironboss.com Last show for Mr. ""Dark One"" Gartman. Hated to see him go. Alan dove into the drum kit at the end of the show. LAST SHOW SAT 5/9/03, Beachland Tavern, Cleveland, OH: Tired & overheated. Put on a good show but the crowd was lackluster. Travis Wilkerson & Susan Fink showed up with their daughter Adva. Was great to see them. Got done and literally flew out of there. As soon as the show started it was over. Way too quick. The beachland staff is A-1. I was pleasantly surprised to see such a punk-rock contingency in Cleveland. I never knew. Me & my army jacket felt at home. OVERALL ANALYSIS: 1. I don't talk much, I stay up too late and I get up too early. 2. Driving makes me incredibly sleepy. 3. When going on tour, never have any expectations of any kind whatsoever. I guess this goes for life in general. 4. I really like touring, but if thousands isn't a touring band. 5. I like it in Duluth. I had a great time, but when I saw my own bed it was like meeting an old friend. I hung out in some of the most famous venues, but when I walked into the Norshor Theater I was greeted by hugs and kind slaps on the back. I think every musician should tour at least once in their life, no matter if it's for a week or 10 years. Either way, you'll come back home with a new perspective on what performing and being a musician is really all about. Thanks to everyone for helping us on the Chairkickers' 2003 Tour. Aaron & I have decided to press the envelope farther & further evolve. Whatever becomes of i.t. will be what if thousands has always been. Thanks again to everyone oh - check out the beginning of the tour below - Madison & Minneapolis....... -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 5/9/2003 Christian Hello all - Here in Baltimore at the Mission Space. Off to the last show in Cleveland @ the Beachland Ballroom tomorrow. We're all getting a little on the goofy side which is good. Al, Haley, Aaron & Brian Gartman doing a soundcheck while Tom Herbers is making us all sound like a million bucks. About to go get some Thai food at an ""authentic"" Thai restaurant. Let's hope it's really authentic and hot enough to burn through steel. Well, off for now. Hope all is well with all of you. -C ~~~~~~~~~ 5/1/2003 Aaron Back on the road tomorrow morning. Off to Chicago. The Boston show has been relocated. It's kind of a bummer because now we go on at 8pm. Tough to be 1st on a 4 band bill at 8pm. I hope at least one person is there. Home Grown starts tonight in Duluth. We have a 20 mn set to play. We will do our best to diary on the road. Check back often and tell your friends to come out to see us. Aaron (if thosuands) ~~~~~~~~~ 4/28/2003 Aaron Back in Duluth for a few days. 1st & 2nd show done on tour. Madison was a nice town. Had a bad turn out at the show. Not sure if other things were going on or if the weather was too nice? Only 20 or so people showed up. Stayed at Christians brothers house. Nice and quiet. Madison has a pizz joint called ""PIZZA EXTREME"" wow. Made it to the Kitty Cat Club the next day for sound check. This is a very nice place. Tons of people turned out. I tell you Nicole Toth is the best. She booked the show in Minneapolis for us and she leaves no ends un-done. Thanks Nicole. The show went very well. Christian and I played very well & we sold some product, all was great. Haley Bonar is making a name for herself. She can put it out every night. Al, well Al is..... Put him in any room and he will make it all work out. I will post some tour photos very soon on our photo page. We have seen some good sights. Like the guy in his white hot rod car with a licens plate that reads "" NO1BETTER"" I was so lucky to see the Best / #1 / all time greatest person in the world. I did get his photo from the van. Thanks to all our friends and new friends for comming out to see us. I used to have a love hate thing for Minneapolis but now, after last night, It has become more of a love like thing. Special thanks to the Guy and I forgot his name but the guy who draws us while we play. He comes to our shows and he talks to us and makes us feel like were making sense out of all this noise. Thank you!!! Hope to see you all again soon. More from the road, Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 4/28/2003 Christian hello it's me... back for some days to rest, get last minute things (hopefully) done and whatnot. minneapolis show on the 26th was a blast. tons of people showed including many old friends and many new. HUGE thanks to all who could attend. special thanks to Nicole Toth, Tom Herbers and the staff at the kitty kat. check this place out - it's beautiful. the food is al dente. "" hometown"" show in madison was a near bust. so much for my old stomping grounds. how embarrasing. no wonder i moved as far north as i could 14 years ago. what the heck happened to this city? if not for most of my family being there the audience would've been pretty thin. oh well. madison's loss. we ate at cracker barrel the next day and i ate so much i nearly exploded. PLEASE check the photo page on our website. I've posted photos shot by Scott Shockey on infrared. I'll be trying to keep the photo page updated as much as I can on tour. until next time.... THANKS! -C ~~~~~~~~~ 4/25/2003 Aaron Packed up last night, going over to Al's and hitting the road to Madison for the 1st show tonight at Catacombs. Im playing drums for both Al & Haley. Im going to be tired after this is all over. Tomorrow night is Minneapolis at the Kitty Cat Club. I used to live just 3 blocks away from this place just 5 years ago. After Minneapolis we head home for 3 days then back on the road for the long leg of the tour, Chicago and on. Will post more tour notes in a few days. Aaron (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 4/25/2003 Christian Stayed up too late last night watching Party Store Minnows, June Panic & Dog Pookah at the Norshor Theater here in Duluth. Great stuff. P.S.M. always make me smile. But I'm pooped. I was suppose to go to bed early but I'll never learn. i.t. is leaving in about an hour for Madison with Alan & Haley for Catacombs. It'll be weird to be on tour in my old stompin' grounds. Way back when I had hair down to my waist (no lie - ask Alan) I used to do stuff like Talking Heads & Violent Femmes covers on an old acoustic on the capitol house steps 'cause that's the only show I could get. You know - the whole case open thing begging for nickels & dimes. I had a blast. That's how I learned how to work a crowd when I used to do solo guitar stuff later on. Playing on the street is the best experience you can get, because if you really suck you won't get any tips which means you won't eat. At which point you should probably make a career move, start practicing more or buy pants much smaller in the waist than you currently own. Now many years later we're stopping there on part of a tour. And now I have no hair on my head. Guess I'm a man of extremes. Who woulda thunk it? It'll be great to see my relatives and some old friends. Mostly my Mom. She's so sick these days. If anyone actually reads this stuff, have a great weekend & hope we see whoever you may be on tour. -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 4/22/2003 Aaron The tour starts this weekend. Looking forward to hitting the road. Here is a new interview link. http://www.erasingclouds.com just click on the ""read the current issue"" link. There are so many more reviews and such,,, too many to keep up with. If you go into yahoo or google, etc, etc search for (if thosuands or if thousands yellowstone or if thousands lullaby / if thou duluth / if thou chairkickers. You get the point. Lots of stuff out there. Just in are new t-shirts, the if thousands crop circles & comming in the next few days or so, if thousands book markers. We hope to see you at a show soon. Please stop us and say hello. Thanks, be well. Aaron (if thosuands) ~~~~~~~~~ 4/18/2003 Christian Figured I'd give this a stab. Busy, busy, busy these days. This past week was yet another blur. Probably a lot to do with the weather. From temperatures in the high 80s to a 60 degree drop in temperature in two days. Well, for those of you who ask us from time to time what it's like in Duluth - there you have it. PhotographerJason Huntzinger has a show up at Pizza Luce here in Duluth - some seriously beautiful prints on the walls there. If you're in the area, you should stop in and check out his work. He did the photo for the cover of ""io"". Experimental Tuesdays are going very well - this week was Jill Hall (dancer) and Gabriel (video) who did a very impressive set, then local performance art legend Tim Kaiser finished the night. I'm planning on expanding & growing E.T. throughout the next year. Speaking of which, Tyler Scouton, the circular saw weilding wildman of local band ""Bratwurst"" and alumnus of the E.T. stage, went to Berlin and met with Einsturzende Neubauten. With any hope, he and I will get Einsturzende to Duluth sometime late this fall. Yet another first for this sleepy town! In other news, recording the soundtrack for Travis Wilkerson has been interesting. Engineer Jakob Larson has a theory that musicians should be recorded in their homes, not a crampt studio, because they're more comfortable. He's got a point. He's right. It sounds more lonely and emotional than we usually always sound. Can't wait to hear the finished/mastered recording. Very excited about the upcoming tour. Honestly exited stupid. People from all over have been emailing me about the different cities we'll be in. Thanks for all the inquiries! Guess that's it for now. Next time I'll be a bit more jovial. Promise. tgif -Christian ~~~~~~~~~ 4/16/2003 Ice storm in Duluth today. It was 90 on Monday and ice storm today. Aaron has been listening to Neko Case (Blacklisted) lately. What a great CD. We are doing some more recording tonight. I have to say it sounds good. It's nice to record at home, you can take your time and everything is the way you remember it. The tour should be a good time. Aaron practiced with Al & Haley the other day. Everything sounds good. Should make for a good show. (if thousands) ~~~~~~~~~ 4/8/2003 Our self release IO has sold out..
